Books I read in June 2025
My reading journey this month has taken me through the inspiring development of parkrun, the poignant reflections of mid-life, and the emotional resilience of those facing life’s toughest challenges. A captivating memoir taking us through the remarkable journey of how parkrun grew from a small time trial at Bushy Park in London to the global phenomenon we know today. But it’s not just about parkrun, it’s about Sinton-Hewitt’s own journey from growing up in South Africa to discovering the life-changing power of running. A must-read for anyone who loves parkrun as much as I do, or anyone interested in the intersection of fitness, community, and personal transformation.
Set in the lush landscapes of Ireland, this weaves together two parallel stories set 100 years apart, each rich in folklore, myths, and the enchanting magic of Ireland. It’s full of heart, wonder, and charm. With the two stories, though separated by time, intricately connected through the power of storytelling and the shared experiences of its characters. It’s a wonderfully heartwarming read, perfect for anyone who loves a little magic in their lives.
Offering a damning critique of the current state of youth mental health, highlighting the detrimental effects of social media, smartphones, and the erosion of free play. Backed by research studies and statistics it presents a sobering view of how these factors have contributed to an anxious generation. It also poses important questions about our role in this crisis and how we might address it. A painful but necessary read, full of uncomfortable truths.
If you’re a foodie (or even if you're not) this is an absolute treat. Part memoir and part cookbook, an exploration of Italian heritage and love for food, filled with delicious stories, mouthwatering recipes, and reflections on the emotional connections we all have to food. The writing is warm, witty, and filled with a sense of nostalgia that made me feel like I was sitting at the table with him. I could almost smell the pasta sauces and hear the clinking of wine glasses.
This reminded me of Fredrik Backman’s writing. The story follows an unlikely adventure of a 100-year-old man who escapes his nursing home, leading to a series of absurd and improbable events. While some of the past adventures, particularly those set during pivotal moments in history, felt slightly unbelievable, the humour and wit of Jonasson’s writing kept me entertained. It’s a quirky and lighthearted read, with moments of sharp social commentary woven throughout.
An incredibly moving read following a courageous battle with cancer over more than a decade, finding purpose and resilience along the way. This is not just about survival, it's about choosing to really live life while you can. It also documents the founding of CoppaFeel. The writing is raw, honest, and deeply personal it’s a testament to the strength of the human spirit and an inspiring reminder to live fully every day.
Instantly captivated by the way it’s written entirely in the form of letters between two strangers. What begins as a simple exchange of thoughts and reflections on life transforms into a beautiful, unexpected friendship. It’s a bittersweet and introspective look at mid-life and the power of connection, even in the most unlikely of circumstances. The book is at once melancholy and uplifting, as the characters grapple with their own regrets and desires for change.
As always I managed to fit in a couple of JD Kirk’s DCI Jack Logan novels which never fail to disappoint. Colder Than the Grave a gritty Scottish crime novels that are full of suspense and complex characters. Kirk’s writing brings the Scottish Highlands to life, with sharp dialogue and intricate plots that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoy dark, atmospheric thrillers with a mix of mystery and a touch of humour, these books are definitely worth checking out.

This came highly recommended to me, and while it was a compelling read, I feel the need to give a trigger warning. The book touches on themes of child and sexual abuse, which made it a more emotionally challenging read than I anticipated. Largely set in a secluded holiday home by the water, the story revolves around the complex relationships of a family with deep-seated secrets. The writing is beautiful, and the narrative is layered with rich, vivid descriptions.
As we head into July, I’ve just started reading Twin Ambitions, Mo Farah’s autobiography
I’m also listening to Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by VE Schwab. If it’s anywhere near as good as The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I’m in for a real treat!
